You can help keep your washer in prime condition with a few preventive maintenance practices that are easy to follow and could save you from trouble down the road.  Here are four easy things to check for.

1. Check the Hoses

The brand new hoses that came with your new washing machine might not be so new anymore.  If they are old, cracked or have some other weakness, they might leak or even burst.  It’s a good idea to check them out from time to time for any sign of wear or weakness.  Sometimes there will be a blister in the rubber that could rupture.  Most manufacturers recommend replacing the hoses on your washer every five years.

If the hose ruptures, water could gush from the hose flooding your home.  If the hot water hose bursts, it could be dangerous.  Gushing hot water could scald anyone close to it.  One alternative is to replace your rubber hot water fill hose with a stainless steel fill hose.

2.  Check the Level

Most people who have owned a washer have experienced it “trying to walk across the floor.”  Washing machines are very heavy, so if they’re not level, the spin cycle can start rocking.  It’s not good for the machine, your floors or anything close to the washer when it starts banging back and forth.

Adjust the front leveling legs to the proper height then tighten the lock nut to keep it from rotating.  Keep the machine as close to the floor as you can.  It’s less likely to vibrate that way.  The rear legs are set by tilting the entire machine forward, then setting the machine back down.  Again, our technicians are adept at leveling your machine quickly and easily.

3.  Keep It Clean

Most washers have either a painted or porcelain-coated steel cabinet.  You can keep it looking like new by using dishwashing detergent and a damp rag.  If you do have a porcelain surface, use a non-abrasive cleanser to get rid of stubborn stains.

4. Dispose of the Lint

You don’t want lint in the washer tub.  Most machines collect the lint in the wash cycle and flush it down during the drain cycle.  Some have a lint filter near the top of the tub that you can slide out, clean, and put back in, much like your dryers lint screen.

These are simple, easy to perform maintenance tips that can help keep your washer in good shape. And any time there is a problem, whether major or incredibly minor, help is just a phone call away.  San Diego Appliance Repair will handle any of your appliance problems quickly and efficiently so you can get on with your life.
